Structured Literacy — ideal Structured Literacy Framework

At Waimairi, learning to read and write is not left to chance.

The Detail

  • Five years of sustained professional learning with Learning Matters — embedded, school-wide, and consistent across every classroom every day
  • Every child receives explicit, cumulative instruction in the building blocks of reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting — the same high standard regardless of which class they are in
  • Spelling and handwriting are taught explicitly, not left to develop on their own — building the fine motor control and letter-sound knowledge that free a child up to focus on ideas, not mechanics
  • Where children need more, dedicated intervention cycles move fast — targeted, structured, and adjusted regularly as progress changes

What this produces is not just capable readers and writers. It is children who spell and write with confidence, who understand themselves as learners, and who arrive at Intermediate school with foundations that hold.

Structured Mathematics — Numicon

Every child can be a mathematician. At Waimairi, that is the expectation — not the aspiration.

The Detail

  • Built on the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract methodology — children learn by doing, then seeing, then thinking
  • Two years of professional learning with EduShop, school-wide consistency, Numicon Advocate School status since 2025
  • Learning Assistants trained in Breaking Barriers and the Numicon Intervention Programme, for children who need targeted small-group support

Strong foundations. Genuine confidence. A positive relationship with mathematics that lasts beyond primary school.

A Broad Curriculum — and a Signature Learning Cycle

A complete education is more than academic. At Waimairi, we build the whole child, on purpose.

  • Rich, purposeful learning across Science, Social Sciences, The Arts, Health and Physical Education
  • Students learn within the New Zealand Curriculum — an authentic bicultural education, unique to this country and this place
  • Every child’s thinking is made visible through our SOLO Taxonomy learning cycle — a shared language that tracks the journey from surface understanding to deep, connected, transferable learning

Ignition and Finale — our signature learning cycle

Every term begins with an Ignition — a hands-on, high-interest experience that launches learning with curiosity and relevance. Every term ends with a Finale — a public sharing of what students have understood, created, or built, celebrated with peers, teachers, and whānau (family). Learning at Waimairi has momentum, meaning, and an audience beyond the classroom.

Children who see learning as something they do, not something done to them.

Supporting Learning & Acceleration

We act early — before a gap has the chance to grow.

The Detail

  • Ongoing, data-informed assessment identifies need early — support is targeted, structured, and fast
  • Intervention groups in literacy and mathematics are fluid, adjusted regularly as data and children’s needs change
  • Dedicated counselling and proactive case management for social, emotional, and wellbeing needs alongside academic support

When we intervene, we tell you. Families receive regular updates, clear reasons for any change in support, and tailored strategies to help at home. You will always know what is happening, and why.

Reporting on Your Child's Progress

You will never have to wonder how your child is doing

The Detail

  • At least twice-yearly written reports in plain language — progress markers, descriptors, rate of progress, next steps, and home support guidance, aligned with the Ministry’s national reporting requirements
  • Standardised assessment, including the Ministry’s SMART (Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting) Tool from 2027, supports accurate, nationally consistent reporting in reading, writing, and maths
  • All other curriculum areas reported once per term
  • The Hero app gives real-time access to progress updates, learning moments, and school communications

A clear and current picture of your child’s growth — academic, creative, social, and personal — available whenever you need it.
